A 41,000 acre rugged
wilderness area dotted with basaltic outcroppings, caves, and lava formations. A series of
east-west running ridges framed by rugged river canyons which was the home to Ishi, the
last survivor of the massacred Yahi Yana Indian tribe, who hid here for decades until
loneliness and starvation forced him to give himself up to the white man.
