Long Gulch Lake

A beautiful, round lake set in a steep basin. Cold water, snow patches. Good fishing (stocked by plane), plenty of firewood. Very peaceful but crowded with horse riders on the weekend.

Length: app. 2 1/4 miles
Elevation: 7,000 feet
Difficulty: Moderate (1/2 uphill)
Permit: Wilderness permit required from any Forest Service station.
Information: Shasta-Trinity National Forest
Water: available from lake (filter or purify)

From Redding:

I-5 to Weed (take Edgewood exit to old Hwy 99), then North on old Hwy 99 to Gazelle-Callahan Road (6 miles). West to Callahan, then south on Forest Hwy 93 (Cecilville Road). Cross Carter Meadows Summit (11.5 miles) then 0.7 miles farther. Left (South) on Forest Rd 39N08 (gravel road that circles head of Carter Meadow then turns west to cross Long Gulch Creek - 1.7 miles from Hwy) Trailhead just west of bridge.

From Trailhead:

Follow trail south on west side of creek, through a forested area, across a meadow (2 small creeks), uphill through another forested area, and a moderately steep climb up switchbacks. Keep right at trail fork (top of climb) & continue west across outlet creek to lake. Campsites along north shore.
